Prime Minister Paetongtarn opens “Onson Klong Yao” Festival in Maha Sarakham, celebrating 142 years of local heritage.

MAHA SARAKHAM, Thailand – At the Wapi Pathum District Office, Maha Sarakham, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra presided over the opening ceremony of the “Onson Klong Yao Chao Wapi: The Best of Local Heritage, Celebrating 142 Years of Wapi Pathum” festival with over 2,000 local residents welcoming on December 20.

The Prime Minister expressed her delight at witnessing the vibrant atmosphere of the event, calling it a prime example of “soft power” that contributes to the economic growth of Maha Sarakham. “The government is committed to supporting soft power initiatives, and the Klong Yao drum is a source of pride for the people of Maha Sarakham. Today, I’m wearing a silk outfit designed to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the province,” she said, thanking the Governor for providing her with the attire.


She further emphasized the government’s intention to make 2025 a year of continuous tourism, with no “low season,” and highlighted the Klong Yao as a key cultural attraction. The Prime Minister also encouraged the media to help spread the word internationally, showcasing Maha Sarakham as a must-visit destination.

Following her speech, the Prime Minister symbolically struck the Klong Yao drum to officially open the festival. The event featured two performances: a Klong Yao performance celebrating the 142nd anniversary of Wapi Pathum and a traditional dance by the Women’s Development Committee of Wapi Pathum.

Ministers and officials also participated in the traditional dance as part of the celebration.
