Pattaya officials, community leaders and students came together to fight drugs in the city’s annual “Pattaya White” showcase.

Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh and City Manager Wuttipol Charoenpol hosted the June 23 event at Central Festival Pattaya Beach that, this year, sought out “idols”, or role models, to promote the Pattaya White program.

The goal of the program is to bring community members closer, strengthen families, and encourage all residents to use their free time productively, learn the value of education, and develop a balanced and sustainable community. Started amid political upheaval, the focus this past year turned to quashing drug use among youths.

Business owners assembled were among the 500 who participated in a seminar to create “white” drug-free businesses in Pattaya. The May 24-25 seminar was organized by Pattaya, Banglamung District and the Narcotics Control Office Region 2.

The heart of the rally, however, was dedicated to choosing “white idols” to volunteers in schools, communities, and organizations. Their job is to rally support not only to battle drug use, but polish Pattaya’s image, such as keeping the beaches clean.

Fifteen ambassadors were chosen with youngsters “Nong Pukky,” “Nong Nammol” and Soi Kophai Community President Weerat Joijinda placing first through third in the competition. All winners received certificates from Ronakit.

The deputy mayor also introduced the Pattaya White program’s “brand ambassador”, actor Teeradej “Alex” Methawarayuth.

The day also offered basic health screenings and a presentation on drug suppression efforts in schools.
