PHETCHABURI, Thailand – Cha-am Beach has been battered by strong winds and waves reaching heights of 2-4 meters, causing severe erosion along a 500-meter stretch of the northern beach, January 12. Authorities have raised warning flags prohibiting tourists from swimming in the sea during this period.
The Thai Meteorological Department, in Announcement No. 7/2568 on cold weather and strong winds in Thailand, reported that a high-pressure system from China has extended to cover the country, bringing colder temperatures and rough seas. Cha-am Beach recorded a temperature drop to 18°C this morning, accompanied by strong winds and high waves. Residents, tourists, and small fishing boats are urged to exercise caution and avoid venturing into the sea.
Along the 5-kilometer Cha-am coastline, waves 2-3 meters high have caused extensive erosion, with parts of the beach collapsing to depths of 1-2 meters over a 500-meter stretch. Strong winds have also damaged trees in some areas. Seawater has surged onto beach chairs and nearby roads, particularly along the southern beach. Many beach operators have been forced to scale back services due to the weather, leading to reduced income.
Hotels and beach businesses have raised warning flags and strictly prohibited swimming in the sea to prevent potential accidents. Tourists are mostly walking along the shoreline, while operators monitor wave and water levels. Preparations are underway to quickly move belongings if seawater levels rise further.
