BANGKOK, Thailand – The government has issued a cold weather alert, urging residents to avoid using alcohol as a means to stay warm, highlighting the significant health risks it poses.

The warning came as northern and northeastern regions are predicted to experience temperatures as low as 8–17 degrees Celsius until Monday. Residents are advised to take precautions to protect their health during this cold spell.

Sasikarn Wattanachan, Deputy Government Spokesperson, explained that while alcohol may create a temporary sensation of warmth, it actually accelerates heat loss and increases the risk of hypothermia. This condition occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can generate it, leading to dangerously low body temperatures. In severe cases, hypothermia can impair the heart and brain, resulting in confusion, unconsciousness, or even death. Excessive alcohol consumption further suppresses the nervous system, compounding these risks, particularly for those exposed to freezing temperatures for prolonged periods.

The administration also highlighted the broader societal risks of alcohol consumption during cold weather. These include increased incidents of impaired judgment, heightened road safety concerns, and a rise in preventable accidents. Such risks not only endanger the individuals consuming alcohol but also affect the safety and welfare of the broader community.

To combat the cold safely, residents are encouraged to adopt healthier habits. Practical recommendations include wearing thick clothing such as gloves, hats, and socks to retain body heat. Consuming balanced meals with fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins can help boost immunity and prevent seasonal illnesses. Staying active through regular exercise promotes circulation and natural warmth. Drinking warm water or other non-alcoholic beverages is advised as a safe and effective alternative to alcohol. (NNT)
