BANGKOK, Thailand – Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister of Thailand, delivered a fiery and passionate speech during a campaign rally for the upcoming local elections in Maha Sarakham. In his speech, Thaksin addressed accusations of corruption that have been levied against him, particularly in light of his earlier political career. With a pointed tone, he responded to critics who accused him of dishonesty, a statement which seemed to challenge those who had repeatedly called him corrupt throughout his political journey.

Thaksin, who made his political debut more than three decades ago, recounted his history of business success and wealth accumulation. He proudly mentioned that when he entered politics, he was transparent about his assets, voluntarily disclosing a fortune of over 60 billion baht. This declaration, he noted, was made despite the fact that the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) did not require such transparency at the time. However, Thaksin’s wealth became a focal point for his critics, and years later, a significant portion of his fortune—46 billion baht—was seized following various legal battles.

Despite the financial setbacks, Thaksin remained defiant and unapologetic. “I didn’t complain even when they seized 46 billion baht from me,” he asserted. He expressed that the wealth he accumulated was the result of honest work, business ventures, and long-term dedication, not corruption. He emphasized that his achievements in business were built over many years and that accusations of fraud were simply political attacks aimed at undermining his reputation.

Thaksin also took aim at his critics, recalling that when he was in the height of his wealth and success, those same critics were asking for financial support from their families. His words were charged with frustration as he criticized the ongoing scrutiny, saying that for some, it seemed that everything he did—whether he breathed or spoke—was met with accusations of wrong-doing.

Thaksin retorts during a fiery rally in Maha Sarakham, passionately defending his wealth and long-standing commitment to Thailand despite years of political opposition.

At the heart of his speech, Thaksin underscored his unwavering commitment to Thailand’s progress, stating that he was not driven by personal wealth but by the desire to improve the country and its people’s livelihoods. He added, “Today, I don’t feel burdened. Even if I had just 700 baht in salary and 300 baht for daily expenses, I would still be content because true happiness comes from seeing the nation and its people thrive.”

Thaksin reflected on his political exile, which has lasted for over 17 years, noting that those who had orchestrated his removal via military coup had promised to bring positive change to the country. Instead, he claimed, the situation had worsened and “many problems” had arisen, including “buffoons” who continue to obstruct progress. He concluded by calling for unity among the people, urging his supporters to help steer the country back on track, a sentiment that resonated deeply with his audience.

Thaksin’s speech was an emotional defense of his career and legacy, presenting his vision of a country that thrives through technological advancements, economic reforms, and progress, despite the controversies that have surrounded his life. He reiterated that, regardless of his critics or legal challenges, his goal was to lead Thailand toward prosperity, a vision he remains committed to pursuing as he continues to play an active role in the country’s political landscape.
