CHIANG MAI, 18 July 2011 – The Northern Meteorological Center has forecast heavy rains for the western and eastern parts of the country during 20-24 July while flood-affected agriculturalists are urged to speedily rehabilitate their farmland.

Based on the report from the Northern Meteorological Center in Chiang Mai, the southwest monsoon previously dominating the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand is weakening in concurrence with another monsoon trough’s upward movement towards southern China. The occurrence has reportedly caused the rain to subside across Thailand during this period.

However, since the monsoon in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand is expected to regain its strength during 20-24 July, heavy rains will likely return, especially in the western part of the country as well as the eastern region.

In the wake of the recent flooding in some areas, the center suggested local agriculturalists to quickly revive their farmland after the flood water receded in order to help speed up the recovery of their crops. They are also warned of plant diseases caused by fungi, which are commonly found in humid conditions.
