NAYPYIDAW – Myanmar’s military government has extended the country’s state of emergency for another six months, just ahead of the fourth anniversary of the February 1, 2021, coup that ousted the civilian government.
According to the state-run Myanmar Digital News, the extension was announced via Telegram, citing the need to complete necessary preparations for holding successful elections. The military government emphasized that ensuring a free and fair election requires national stability and peace.
Myanmar’s military seized power from Aung San Suu Kyi’s government on February 1, 2021, triggering widespread unrest and violent crackdowns on opposition groups. While the junta has promised to hold elections this year, critics argue that the move is merely a façade to maintain military control through proxy leadership. (TNA)
