TAK, Thailand – Authorities in Mae Ramat district, Tak province, have taken legal action against a Myanmar national for violating the provincial open burning ban. The individual was caught setting fire to sugarcane leaves in Mae Cha Rao subdistrict and has been handed over to police. The arrest followed field inspections carried out to prevent agricultural burning, which contributes to wildfires and air pollution.

Under the directive of District Chief Parinya Sairot, local officials, along with the Mae Ramat Volunteer Defense Corps Unit 6 and other agencies, inspected a five-rai sugarcane field. They found clear evidence of illegal burning, with some areas still smoldering. Upon questioning nearby workers, authorities identified the suspect as a 56-year-old Myanmar national, who admitted to starting the fire using a cigarette lighter.

The burning ban in Tak is part of efforts by the government to reduce haze pollution and PM2.5, which pose serious health and environmental risks. Officials have reinforced enforcement measures, stressing the impact of open burning on air quality. Local communities are being urged to comply with environmental laws to prevent worsening conditions.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect had entered Thailand illegally, violating immigration laws in addition to the burning ban. He was arrested and transferred to Mae Ramat Police Station, where he faces legal proceedings under environmental and immigration regulations. (NNT)
