BANGKOK, Thailand – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is rolling out new pedestrian-friendly bus shelters to enhance public transportation convenience and safety. According to BMA spokesperson Ekvarunyu Amrapal, the new shelters are designed to blend seamlessly with their surroundings without obstructing sidewalks, ensuring accessibility for pedestrians.
The shelters feature a simple, open design with lighting and real-time public transport information. They are also built to accommodate future upgrades into Smart Bus Shelters, further improving Bangkok’s urban transit infrastructure. The initiative aims to encourage more residents to use public transportation by providing greater comfort and accessibility.
There are currently two shelter designs:
Type M (C2): 2×3 meters with seating for three passengers
Type L (C3): 2×6 meters with seating for six passengers
As of the 2023 fiscal year, 30 shelters have been completed. In the 2024 fiscal year, 60 shelters have been installed, with 29 more under construction. For the 2025 fiscal year, BMA has allocated a budget to construct an additional 300 shelters across the city. (BMA)
