BANGKOK, Thailand – The government has reaffirmed its efforts to secure the release of four Thai fishermen detained in Myanmar, with diplomatic negotiations taking place at multiple levels. Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Russ Jalichandra stated that the ministry is coordinating with all relevant parties to resolve the situation. While not all actions are made public, discussions with Myanmar authorities are ongoing to achieve a successful outcome.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is pursuing political and consular approaches to secure the crew members’ release. Thai officials have engaged in direct talks with Myanmar representatives, submitted formal requests, and facilitated visits by government officials to monitor the detainees’ conditions.

Consular officers have been in regular contact with the detained fishermen since their arrest on November 30, 2024. Family members have been allowed to visit them, with additional visits being arranged through the Department of Consular Affairs. Thai embassy officials in Yangon are closely monitoring the situation and working with Myanmar authorities to ensure the detainees’ well-being and legal rights.

The government has assured the families that every effort is being made to bring their relatives home safely. Officials have since facilitated meetings between family representatives and government agencies in Bangkok and Ranong province. The MFA remains available to assist relatives in organizing further visits and providing updates on ongoing diplomatic efforts. (NNT)
