BANGKOK, 13 July 2015 – Deputy Minister of the Ministry Agriculture and Cooperatives Amnuay Patise has chaired the opening ceremony of the silk competition held by the Department of Sericulture today.

The Deputy Minister said that Thai silk is a famous Thai product that is both beautiful and has its own distinctive identity. The art of making Thai silk has been passed down from generation to generation since ancient times.

The competition is being held to preserve this traditional knowledge and increase global awareness of Thai silk. The market for Thai silk has grown over the years, as more people are wearing clothes made of silk.

As a result, silk farmers are earning more and enjoying better living standards. According to Sericulture Department Director-General Veena Pongpattananon, the event will be held until tomorrow at the Government Complex with the competition divided into five categories.

They include fabrics made of local silk and peacock-branded silk, silk-based clothes and products, and those made from mulberry leaves. The winning products and apparel will be on display at the silk exhibition in August.
