BANGKOK, Thailand – The government is moving forward with legislative efforts to protect and promote the rights of ethnic communities following the House of Representatives’ approval of the Protection and Promotion of the Way of Life of Ethnic Groups Act. The bill, now under review by the Senate, seeks to formalize policies that safeguard cultural heritage, support traditional livelihoods, and strengthen community representation in decision-making processes. The Ministry of Culture is closely monitoring its progress to ensure that the concerns of ethnic groups are addressed.
Minister of Culture Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol acknowledged that while some provisions were not included in the final version passed by the House, the government will continue working to advance policies that recognize the cultural contributions of ethnic communities. The bill introduces structured mechanisms that allow ethnic representatives to engage with policymakers, ensuring their perspectives are included in national development strategies.
A key aspect of the legislation is the protection of cultural and ethnic lifestyle areas; however, specific measures related to community land rights were excluded. The Ministry of Culture has pledged to continue working at the policy level to support these protections through the Ethnic Groups Protection and Promotion Committee. The committee will develop practical solutions to safeguard indigenous traditions and ensure fair management of communal lands.
Beyond legal protections, the ministry is also working to raise public awareness and enhance the perception of ethnic communities in Thai society. Efforts include closer collaboration with ethnic groups and multiple government agencies to ensure they receive tangible support. The goal is to create a more inclusive society where cultural diversity is acknowledged and respected. (NNT)
