BANGKOK, Thailand – The Bang Rak District (Bang Rak meaning “District of Love”) was bustling with activity this Valentine’s Day as couples flocked to register their marriages.
Its name makes it a popular destination for couples, and the office set a goal of 999 registrations this year, with couples vying for a chance to win 14 golden marriage certificates through lucky draws.
The atmosphere inside the Jewelry Trade Center on Silom Road was filled with love as couples participated in the “Precious Love Like a Gem at Bang Rak” event. Registration officials set up an off-site registration booth for couples of all genders and ages. Over 700 couples pre-registered online, and walk-ins were also welcomed.
This year was especially significant due to the recent enactment of the Equal Marriage Law, which led to many LGBTQ+ couples registering their marriages.
They expressed their desire to start their married life on Valentine’s Day, a day they had been waiting for decades. Previously, they could only register their relationships, not their marriages.
Later in the day, there will be a traditional Thai wedding procession led by the Governor of Bangkok. (TNA)
