MAE HONG SON, Thailand – The Governor of Mae Hong Son has clarified that the number of foreign and Israeli tourists visiting Pai District is around 2,000-3,000 per month, with most visitors leaving after their trips. The reported figure of 30,000 refers to the total accumulated visits throughout the year. Authorities are strictly monitoring cases where foreign tourists engage in jobs meant for locals.

Recent social media reports claimed that a large number of Israeli visitors had settled in Pai, establishing permanent communities, forming Chabad groups, and allegedly disrupting local livelihoods. However, Governor Ekawit Meephian dismissed these claims, stating that Pai has a total population of approximately 38,000 people. British tourists make up the largest foreign visitor group, followed by Israeli tourists. The monthly number of Israeli visitors is around 2,000-3,000, while the reported 30,000 figure represents total visits recorded over an entire year.

The governor emphasized that local authorities have been consistently enforcing regulations. Cases involving foreign tourists violating labor laws—such as playing music for money—have been addressed. Officials have also taken action against incidents of disruptive behavior. A recent case involving four individuals at Pai District Hospital led to visa revocations and deportations.

To prevent unauthorized employment, agencies including immigration police, labor officials, and security forces continue to conduct regular inspections. The government is monitoring various concerns, including illegal employment, criminal activity, and inappropriate behavior, implementing measures ranging from warnings to stricter legal action.

Mae Hong Son’s appeal as a tourist destination lies in its pleasant climate and relaxing atmosphere, attracting various types of visitors. Some tourists come for short visits, while others return frequently after falling in love with the area. A smaller group stays for extended periods due to a deep connection with the location. While long-term tourism benefits local communities economically, authorities remain vigilant in enforcing immigration and labor laws. (TNA)
