BANGKOK, 20 July 2015 – The Provincial highway authorities have warned that all canal-side roads are in danger of collapsing as the drought crisis has dried up canals across the country.

Motorists are advised to drive slowly and with caution alongside canals. Truck drivers are urged to avoid certain routes due to strong possibility of subsidence.

Many canals in Pathum Thani have dried up, leaving barely any traces of water. A number of cracks have been reported on canal-side roads, but vehicles have not yet been prohibited to pass through.

Local highway units have prepared mobile teams to survey warning signs in risky areas. Residents living near canals are also urged to look out for signs of a road collapse and report them to the Rural Road department hotline number 1146.
