BANGKOK, Thailand – Natural Resources and Environment Minister Chalermchai Sri-on has refuted allegations made by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) that Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi is exploiting and mistreating “Moo Deng,” a miniature hippopotamus, for entertainment purposes in an unhygienic environment.
Minister Chalermchai emphasized that the zoo follows international standards in caring for Moo Daeng and other animals, ensuring their welfare, proper housing, and health. He pointed out that the mother of Moo Daeng has successfully given birth to seven offspring, which he considers proof of the zoo’s proper care and management.
He also mentioned that several academic and wildlife organizations are prepared to clarify any misunderstandings to protect the reputation of Thailand’s zoos. Given the clear facts, he urged that both Thai citizens and international tourists be informed to prevent any negative impact on the country’s tourism sector.
Regarding PETA’s claims, Chalermchai called on the organization to visit Khao Kheow Zoo and assess the situation firsthand. He reiterated that while pygmy hippos are an endangered species, Thailand has successfully bred a significant number. Although he could not confirm if the country has the highest number globally, he noted that one of Moo Deng’s siblings was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, attracting attention despite the zoo being closed at the time.
The minister reaffirmed that Thai zoos adhere to proper animal welfare standards and continuously improve their facilities to ensure the well-being of all animals in their care. (TNA)
