BANGKOK, Thailand – The government is reviewing whether to extend its contract to host MotoGP in 2026, with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra instructing the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to conduct a feasibility study. Without an extension, 2026 could be the final year Thailand hosts the prestigious motorcycle racing event. The study will assess financial viability and economic impact before a decision is reached.

The prime minister stated that any event benefiting the country and its citizens should continue if it remains financially sustainable. If the assessment shows losses, the government will reconsider its budget allocation and whether continued support is justified. The review will include factors such as tourism revenue, local business impact, and Thailand’s presence in international motorsports.

Concerns have been raised over the political implications of renewing the contract, as Chang International Circuit in Buriram province, the host venue, is owned by a veteran politician. The premier clarified that the decision would be based solely on national interest and economic benefits rather than political considerations. She reaffirmed that revenue generated from MotoGP contributes to both the provincial and national economy, regardless of venue ownership.

A final decision on the MotoGP contract will be made after the feasibility study is completed. The outcome will determine whether Thailand remains a host nation for the event beyond 2026 or redirects resources to other tourism and sporting opportunities. (NNT)
