RANONG, Thailand – The government, led by the Ministry of Transport, is enhancing Ranong Port’s capacity as cargo operators shift trade routes due to instability in Myanmar. Ongoing unrest in Myawaddy and Tachileik, along with disruptions at other border checkpoints, has redirected trade to Ranong, resulting in a 200% increase in activity. In response, the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) is expanding docking facilities, increasing container storage, and improving cargo handling to accommodate growing demand.

This shift has created economic opportunities for Thailand while providing businesses with a stable and efficient alternative for cross-border trade. The upgrades at Ranong Port align with the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) strategy, strengthening Thailand’s position as a regional logistics hub and reinforcing trade connections with Myanmar and other markets.

Ranong Port’s operations have experienced rapid growth. In the 2024 fiscal year, ship dockings rose by 69%, container processing increased by 111%, and total cargo volume surged by 251%. The first quarter of fiscal year 2025 has seen continued expansion, with ship dockings up by 91% and container units processed increasing by 458%. Rising imports of animal feed corn and exports of sanitary products, consumer goods, and paper rolls have contributed to this strong performance.

The Ministry of Transport and PAT will continue improving the port’s infrastructure to support rising trade volumes. These developments ensure long-term benefits for businesses, logistics operators, and regional economies, securing Thailand’s role as a key player in international trade. (NNT)
