Travellers Rest Golf Group
Just three outings to report on this past week and we were treated to the Ted Senior, show with the old maestro putting in two match winning performances. In fact Ted won so much money he even shelled out for a couple of rounds of drinks and you have to go back to the last century when anyone remembers that happening before, in fact I was still in short trousers at the time. Fergus Brennan remembered it being a Tuesday but he has got a good memory, except when it comes to remembering his correct age.
Monday, July 20, Phoenix – Stableford
The week got off to a lively start on Monday with the short trip over to Phoenix to play the Mountain and Ocean layouts. For me it was a case of “all our yesterdays” because I met up with the first ever caddie I had when I first came to Pattaya ten years ago.
(From left) Ted Senior and Jon Dean.
Having arrived the day before with two golfing friends to play in the CANAM Open, we had no idea what to tip the caddies at the end of the round so we gave them all 1,000 baht each. Needless to say they adopted us thereafter and when it came time for us to leave they all bought us presents, which my friends and I have never forgotten. So it was great to catch up on old times with one the best caddies I have ever had in Thailand.
As for Monday’s competition, it was Jon Dean who made it a red letter day by sinking putts from all over the place and amassing an amazing 40 points to take first place. The inscrutable Ito Akitoshi came second on 37 points and steady eddie Roger Wilkinson continued his good form of late by taking third place.
1st John Dean (11) 40pts
2nd Ito Akitoshi (9) 37pts
3rd Roger Wilkinson (13) 35pts
Wednesday, July 22, Burapha – Stableford
On Wednesday it was back once again to Burapha but this time to play the C and D courses. The aforementioned Ted Senior strode to the fore and rattled up a quite remarkable 39 points on the two most difficult nines at Burapha to take top spot. The self-confident Ted explained that this round had been coming for a long time and we all nodded in agreement, although I think he meant his round of golf while we were all thinking he meant his round of drinks.
Jim Cleaver had yet another good round to come second and Richard Talbot wasn’t far behind in third place
1st Ted Senior (14) 39pts
2nd Jim Cleaver (8) 36pts
3rd Richard Talbot (16) 34pts
Friday, July 24, Pattavia – Stableford
The golfing week drew to a close on Friday with a final performance at Pattavia Century. Once again that man Ted Senior could not be beaten but in this case it took a photo finish to separate the top three, who all finished on 35 points. Ted eclipsed the second and third after a count back and to crown his day he scored the only ‘2’ and walked off with the pot. Jim Groves had to make do with second place and another Jimmy, Jim Cleaver took third.
So it is congratulations to Ted Senior and now he has found the bottom of his pockets I look forward to his next round.
1st Ted Senior (13) 35pts
2nd Jim Groves (12) 35pts
3rd Jim Cleaver (8) 35pts
