A photographic exhibition entitled ‘Carnet de voyage’ opened Monday, July 27 at the L’Auberge De Pierre French restaurant on Pratamnak Hill, near the corner of soi 4.

The man behind the lens showcasing approximately 20 framed photographs is Michel Thureau.  He originally comes from Brittany in France and remembers his grandfather teaching him about photography when he was a small child.  Now over 50 years later he has for the very first time showcased his work to the general public.

Over the years he learned how to develop photographs using his bathroom as a darkroom and has studied composition and in time moved on to digital photography.

The works on display were taken in France, Myanmar, Thailand & Cambodia.  Michel told our reporters that he had over 2000 images to choose from and that narrowing it down to just 20 was a task in itself.  However he wanted to show a diverse portfolio.

Some of the shots, like those of young monks in Myanmar are staged to get the perfect balance and utilize natural lighting and shadows.  Other are more of a reportage nature, such as a kilted gentleman in a town square in Vannes, France, a Thai traditional dancer at the Ruen Thai restaurant in Pattaya, or a heavyweight boxer at the boxing stadium on Thepprasit Road.

There are also a number of photos featuring wildlife and classic structures such as the Shweddagon golden Pagoda in Rangoon (Yangon), Myanmar and Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

As it was the opening night for the exhibition, staff & management at L’Auberge de Pierre laid out a great buffet and a fruity glass of sangria that had quite a kick.

L’Auberge de Pierre is open six days (closed Mondays), hours 11.30 to 2.30 for lunch and then 6.30 to 11 p.m. (on-street parking in Soi 4).  Telephone 093 864 9080, web www.aubergedepierre.com.
