NAKHON PHANOM, 5 August 2015, Local farmers of Nakhon Phanom province’s Pla Pak district have supplemented their income by catching grasshoppers.

Grasshopper populations have increased significantly during the rainy season. They can be found grazing near rice farms in Ban Nong Bua of Pla Pak district.

Farmers in the area said that middlemen would come in and buy these insects wholesale. They revealed that grasshoppers can bring in 400 – 1,000 baht per day, depending on a person’s skills and persistence.

Aside from selling grasshoppers for cash, locals also use the insect as the main ingredient in a few local dishes. Vendors sell these dishes at around 30 – 40 baht per plate.
