Monday, August 10, Khao Kheow – Jaa Memorial Cup

Early Monday morning, at 7.00 a.m., we held what has now become an annual event – the Jaa Memorial Cup at Khao Kheow.  This competition is run in memory of a caddy named Jaa (No 065) who worked at this course until her untimely death four years ago from dengue fever.  Jaa was one of the best caddies at Khao Kheow and was also certainly one of the most beautiful and nicest members of staff.  She was only twenty-six years old when she died.

The competition is confined to caddies at Khao Kheow only and has become a very hotly contested event, with nearly fifty players taking part this year, both in memory of their former colleague Jaa but also in an effort to get their names inscribed on the beautiful trophy.

This was the fourth year of the competition and once again we had a new winner.  The standard of golf from the caddies was very good, with many of them coming in with scores which any of us would be very happy with.  This is a medal competition and as we all know, this is not an easy course to play that kind of format.  Also these ladies could teach a lot of us how to play golf as they all went around the course in less than four hours.

We would also like to thank the IPGC for their help in sponsorship the tournament again this year.  This meant that we had lots of prizes to give out and also a lucky draw afterwards for the ladies who didn’t feature in the prizes.

After the golf we all assembled in the course restaurant for a nice meal and the presentation, which was also nice for the caddies as it is the only day of the year they are allowed in the clubhouse.

Prakaidao (right) came second with a net 71.

The winner this year was Somjit, Caddy No 009, with an excellent net 70, the best winning score so far in this competition’s history.  In second place with a net 71 was Prakaidao, (Caddy No 123) and third was Suwanna (Caddy No 210) with a net 72, a score which in previous years would have won the competition, so the standard is definitely getting better every year.

Near pin prizes went to Tippawan (No 268). Samaporn (No 336), Nichchanipa (No 174) and Wanapen (No 178) while the long drive awards were picked up by Sopa (No 332).and Wina (No 188).

If anyone is playing golf here at this course in the future try and book one of these caddies, at least you will be guaranteed to have a caddy who can play golf, probably better than you can yourself!
