BANGKOK, 20 August 2015 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the exchange of artillery fire between North and South Korea resulted in no casualties among Thai people.

Following the latest clashes between the two Koreas over their common border, Mr Sek Wannamethee, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, stated that inquiries have been made with the Thai Embassy in Seoul about the situation. According to the Embassy, he said no Thai citizens in South Korea have been injured or affected by the incident.

Nonetheless, a warning has been issued to the Thai people there, who number approximately 80,000, to exercise caution during this period and to follow updates from the Thai Embassy and the South Korean government.

Earlier, North Korea fired a rocket into the South’s territory, prompting the latter to retaliate. Due to the violence, border towns on the South Korean side have had to evacuate thousands of residents.
