More than 100 military officers trained how to detect and remove landmines and unexploded ordinance at a seminar in Pattaya.

Gen. Wittaya Wachirakul, director of the Thailand Mine Action Center, led the Aug. 18-20 workshop at the Mountain Beach Hotel. Lectures covered basic safety measures, mine-detection equipment, land release techniques, team planning, and mine clearance.

Wittaya said 16 border provinces are still considered at risk for landmines and unexploded ordinance. The explosives are one factor that has inhibited better development of border areas, he said.
