Sunday, August 15, Green Valley – Stableford

A Flight

1st James Brackett (8) 41pts

2nd Thomas Nyborg (14) 37pts

3rd Nick Odnoral (15) 36pts

4th Barry Copestake (13) 36pts

B Flight

1st Marcus Earp (35) 35pts

2nd Nick Shaw (19) 35pts

3rd Jim Elphick (26) 34pts

4th Peter Henshaw (23) 33pts

As usual Green Valley was found to be in great condition, with the greens returning to their old slick style.  What was unusual was that this course normally gets a battering from some great scores this time of year but today, in general, the results were pretty poor.  Perhaps it was the blistering heat and very heavy humidity.

Due to a fair sized number of players the field was split into two divisions with four podium spots up for grabs and the split made at handicap seventeen.

Jim Brackett, fresh from his medal winning performance the previous Sunday, carried on where he left off and posted an A Flight and man of the match winning 41 points.  Denmark’s Thomas Nyborg followed Jim up the podium steps on 37 points and the minor places were sorted out by a count back as Aussie star Nick Odnoral, Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake and Phil ‘the Welsh wonder’ Davies were tied on even par returns.  The count back was very close, going down to the last three holes on the outer nine, with Nick holding on for the bronze, as Barry closed the flight podium to leave Phil all at sea level and pot less.

In B Flight the scoring was very average with no player bettering or playing to their handicap, the nearest being ‘Sheriff’ Marcus Earp who out gunned Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw in a count back as both were tied on 35-point returns.  Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick took the bronze a shot adrift as Irishman Peter ‘no nickname’ Henshaw closed the flight a further stroke adrift.

Please spare a thought for Terry Mangan who has had to return to Ireland after receiving sad news that his brother has passed away.  All our thoughts are with Terry and his family.

Wednesday, August 19, Burapha C & D – Stableford

1st Geoff Scot (15) 37pts

2nd Loy Szigligeti (14) 33pts

3rd Peter Henshaw (23) 31pts

4th Peter Walker (19) 30pts

Wednesday was a visit to Burapha where the C and D combination was to be out task.  Indeed a test it was, with good scores a bit thin on the ground due to the participants’ relative ability and the tough conditions.  The greens were slick and true, so putts were at a premium, but having said that it was the same for everyone.

Geoff Scot came to grips with the conditions best as he was the only player to better his handicap with a man of the match 37 points.  Geoff was four clear of Lou ‘Zigzag’, who is starting to handle his new handicap a little better.  Peter ‘no nickname’ Henshaw took the third podium spot with 31 points while Peter Walker and Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick had to be separated by a count back as both had 30-point returns.  When the dust had settled it was Peter who got to stand on the podium and close the flight.

Friday 21st August Plutaluang Navy course

A Flight

1st Kevin Rogers (13) 37 pts

2nd Tip Briney (24) 34 pts

3rd Peter Henshaw (23) 33 pts

The Lewiinski’s Golf Society returned to Plutaluang Navy course to play its regular Friday stableford event over a course which continually poses a stiff challenge to golfers of all levels.  The course condition at present is good and the welcome afforded is always a warm one.

A variety of “domestic” circumstances and the persistent heat and humid conditions conspired to keep the field small on this occasion but nevertheless the competition was fierce.

Peter ‘Don O’Corleone’ Henshaw found himself in the frame again as his 33 points was good for the third step on the podium.  Fellow Mick, Tip Briney, with a fair 34 points took the silver position, but standing atop of the podium and stopping it from being an all Irish affair was Kevin ‘the thunder from down under’ Rogers with a flight winning and man of the match card of 37 excellent points.
