PSC Golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Monday, August 31, Siam Plantation – Stableford

We were playing Siam Plantation for the first time in ages and nothing seemed to have changed – it is still in the magnificent condition it was always in before, with beautiful fast greens and fairways like carpets.

With 6 groups playing we got away a little early and with no holdups were around in just under four hours.  It was a great day for golf with high cloud and as usual at this course a nice breeze blowing.  We will be playing here again this month with games on Thursday 17th and again on Monday the 28th, so keep those dates in mind as we could only get bookings for 6 groups.

Monday’s top three: (L-R) Lloyd, Scotty and Kev.

The scores on Monday were either very good or very bad, depending on how you looked at them.  The range went from as low as 11 points up to the winners on 37, which was a three-way count back between Lloyd Shuttleworth, Scotty Qua and Kev McIntosh, with Kev getting the nod over Scotty in second and Lloyd third.

There were four ‘2’s today, coming from Lloyd Shuttleworth with one and Andy Butterworth with three.

Wednesday, Sept. 2, Green Valley – Stableford

With the meteorologists forecasting heavy rain nearly every day this week, we would not have been surprised if we were overwhelmed with rain pounding down at our regular weekly visit to Green Valley.  Golfers would not necessarily want a downpour on their day of golf but everyone will certainly agree that all the courses need water.  Opposite the Billabong Bar, Mapbrachan Lake – sorry, shall we say puddle not a lake – reflects the water problems that exist around the Pattaya area.

When we arrived at Green Valley today a nice cloud cover kept the temperature at a moderate and acceptable level but by mid-morning the sun had beaten the clouds into submission and everyone began to feel the heat becoming more of a problem.

Wednesday’s lady winners: Nu, Saipin and Eng.

Although the greens here are currently being left with a little more grass on them, making them that much slower, the scores today were exceptionally high.  Many of the 34 players had scores which were better than their handicap indicating, perhaps, that there will be an adjustment to some handicaps soon.

Derrick Mower just had the better of Kevin Wild, relegating him to fifth place with 38 points.  Gentry Harrington returned to the podium with 40 points for fourth and William Macey, having his best score for a few weeks, had a great 42 points only to be shown a clean pair of heals by Freddy Starbeck on 44 points.

In the ladies competition the scores were equally as good with the previous week’s star performer, Miss Eng, finishing with 37 points but still some way behind Miss Anucha on 42 points.  However even that wasn’t good enough for the win and standing on the top of the podium was Miss Siapin with whopping 43 points.

Only three ‘2’s today, going to Miss An, Herd and Billabong regular Wayne Cotterell.

Friday, Sept. 4, Phoenix – Stableford

We played Phoenix on Friday in perfect conditions; the rain clouds tried to get us but were unsuccessful and even though the siren went off a couple of times I didn’t hear of anyone going off the course because of it.

The course was in magnificent condition, the greens being particularly good and fast and you could not get a bad lie on the fairways anywhere.  But if you got off the short grass you had your work cut out for you.  Phoenix played tough as only one player out of 6 groups played to his handicap while the rest of us were also-rans.

It was count back time again in the battle for fourth place between Gordon Duncan, Paul Bourke and Gentry Harrington, with Gentry getting the nod thanks to his 20 points on the back nine.  Third place went to Willie Dunlop with 33 points and this spot was also decided on a count back as Alan Beck took second with the same score.  In first place was Lloyd Shuttleworth with his fine even par round of 36 points.

There were no ‘2’s recorded today.
