Jomtien Golf with the I.P.G.C.

Monday, July 18, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

A normal green fee here today after a few discussions with the management considering it was a public holiday; many thanks to Pattaya Country Club, but it was still relatively deserted and our last group teed off just after ten o’clock.

The greens here have improved over the past few weeks and are very slick and true and with a cool breeze and a cloudy environment it was perfect.

The cut today was 7-16 in division 1 and 17+ plus in division 2 and the best score of the day was 36 in division 1 from Helge Bjunes, playing off 12, who finished one ahead of 9-handicapper Torgier Tunge, and in third place with 34 points was Tony Thorne.

Yet again in first place, Brian Blackford won division 2 with 35 points while Tom Novak was second after beating Harry Vincenzi on a 15/14 back nine count-back after they both scored 30 points.

Mikael Andersson birdied the 7th and 16th to take the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and a rollover goes to Greenwood on Wednesday in division 2.

The last group out today came in directly after the four-ball in front.  The lessons have been learned, we hope.

Wednesday, July 20, Greenwood – Stableford

There were still two divisions out today and the cut was 5-16 in division 1 and 17 plus in division 2.

Playing off 10 Torgier Tunge cames in on level par gross 36 on the front nine to score 23 points, but it was slightly downhill on the back nine as he only scored 15 to win division 1 with 38 points in total.  Chris Voller was second two points behind and Phil Mitchell, playing off 5, was third with 34.

Count-back Burnie was yet again in the news, winning division 2 with 36 points ahead of Brain Howe in second with 35 and Ted Morris in third on 34.

In the ‘2’s in division 1 there were no rollovers and Phill Mitchell birdied the 6th on the A course to collect the pot.  In division 2 there were no ‘2’s so three rollovers to Bangpakong next Monday.

It was bon voyage today to Chris Reed after his month here and only one round of golf.  We will say no more!

Friday, July 22, Eastern Star – Stableford

Yet again another new member joined up at Eastern Star for a life membership and the numbers are increasing every Friday.

There had been heavy rain here in Jomtien since early morning and as we departed Siam Cats the phone started to ring.  There were seven cancellations on the way to the course so a total rearrangement took place on the way there.  In the end we had two divisions with nearest the pins as well.

The first group went out in a slight drizzle and this ended after three holes and the other 6 groups enjoyed a very pleasant round.

His other half was away today and Darryl Blair, playing off 17, shot 42 points to win division 1.  Mikaael Andersson took second with 37 and Chris Voller beat Bill Bertram 11/10 on the back six after they both scored 31 points.

Lee Casey, playing off 22, won division 2 with 35 points, Jim Lane was second two points behind and Tom Novak was in third with 30.

Probably the toughest par three on the course, the 13th , saw two birdie ‘2’s today; Mikael Andersson in division 1 and the new boy Paul Hobson with a three inch putt in division 2.  Roy Thornton’s sponsored rollover prize on the 12th hole for nearest the pin in two shots was won by Brian Priestley.  There were many remarks afterwards regarding the nearest the pin prizes and the ‘2’s, if you are having a bad round in the stableford you can still come in winning a prize.

The last group out today, no names mentioned, kept up with the group in front and the group behind.  Well done boys, it is getting through at last.

Near Pins:  Tom Byrne, Brian Priestley, Tom Novak, Mikael Andersson, Paul Hobson, Chris Voller, Bryan Rought
