The Provincial Electricity Authority began replacing utility poles weakened by last month’s devastating storm, installing larger, sturdier models in their place.

Suntorn Tabmala, operations chief, led a team of workers Sept. 19 to an area near Suttawas Temple where a number of poles were crooked, loose, and leaning, in the wake of floods that swamped the area Sept. 14-18.

The goal was to relocate the posts and move them to the sidewalk, approximately 1.3 meters from their original positions, and replace broken posts.

Tilting power poles have been a common problem in Pattaya, with residents always complaining about the risk of one falling on them. The larger poles will not only be larger, but more able to accommodate the jumble of power and communications lines fastened to them.

On this day, two posts were replaced near the 7-Eleven in front of the temple and two more near the Ruay Kot restaurant.

Suntorn said poles found no longer to be necessary will be removed entirely.
