1,000 compete in Astec Pattaya Badminton Sawasdee Cup

More than 1,000 athletes joined Thailand’s largest badminton tournament when the Astec Pattaya Badminton Sawasdee Cup opened at the Eastern National Indoor Sports Arena last week.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Kron Tapparangsri kicked off the games Nov. 13 with Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and Alan Boody Kusuma, president of Astec Pattaya Co.

The fifth-annual tournament, held from Nov. 13-15, drew top national and international players, as well as amateurs.

Players competed in men’s and women’s singles, and men’s, women’s and mixed doubles.  Age brackets grouped players into five-year brackets.

There was also a general professional team category, with the winning team taking home 60,000 baht and the runner-up receiving half that.

In total, 300,000 baht in prize money was up for grabs.
