Pattaya longboat races this weekend

Thailand’s top longboat racers will compete for cash and trophies at the 15th Pattaya Traditional Long Boat Tournament, being staged from Nov. 21-22 at Mabprachan Reservoir.

Pattaya, Nongprue and tourism officials announced plans for the 9 a.m.-6 p.m. races at a press meeting held Nov. 12.  They’ll feature long-tail boats with deep roots in Thai culture.  Chonburi Province, Pong and Nongprue sub-districts and the Thailand Rowing and Canoeing Association will support the race.

Trophies will be awarded in six categories: Large boats (55 paddlers), long-tail boats (30 paddlers), large boats types A and B, small boats type B and international boats (12 paddlers).  Prizes include 300,000 baht in cash and the HRH Princess Soamsawalee Royal Cup.

Nongprue Mayor Mai Chaiyanit said the races, which have been held at the venue since 2000, will also features other events such as a dirt bike competition, judging of the best looking and best-built longboats, buffalo racing and a school drum corps competition.
