The Max und Moritz restaurant has been around for many years on the Dark Side, but since changing hands one month ago, this little restaurant has been on the way up.
Now run by two energetic young women, Thip and Dao, they are beginning to mold the restaurant to their way of thinking.
It is in a double shophouse with one side dedicated as a rustic beverage garden, complete with pool table for the pool league, and the other side glassed in and air-conditioned, white tiles on the floor, large tables and comfortable swivel chairs plus a small sit-up bar along one wall. The restaurant can accommodate 40 people.
My fish was dory and was properly filleted with no bones to catch me out.
The menu is not large, but is pictorial as well as typed. Well done Thip and Dao. The diner can see what is ordered. There are also blackboard specials and on our night was grilled pork or chicken with mushrooms and rice or chips.
Madame ordered a Weiner Schnitzel with German style potatoes.
The main menu has 10 western items with the most expensive being a pork chop at B. 180. Fish and chips are B. 150, Weiner Schnitzel B. 160, German sausage B. 110, grilled sausage B. 90 and fried sausage also B. 90, Fried chicken and salad B. 130, a salmon hamburger B. 110, bacon sandwich B. 100 and spaghetti carbonara B. 140.
Larb was provided as a starter.
There are three different sauces to go with the western items, being a “Gypsy” (spicy) sauce, mushroom and finally a pepper sauce.
There is also a Thai menu with the individual items generally around B.80.
Madame felt like a Thai starter and a Larb was provided. Larb can be quite spicy, and this one was! However, with Thip in the kitchen, the spiciness can be made to order.

For mains, Madame had ordered a Weiner Schnitzel with German style potatoes, while I went for the very traditional fish and chips.
Both meals were overflowing on the plates and at the prices represent incredibly good value for money. The schnitzel was so large, Madame could not get through all of it! My fish was dory and was properly filleted with no bones to catch me out. The tartare sauce was excellent and there was plenty of it.
Both of us were very pleased with our meal and made a decision that we would return.
So far so good, now comes the difficult part – finding it! It is well down into the Dark Side off Khao Noi. About three km from the railway line, and you take Soi 9 which is on your left. The signs for the sois are very small, so travel slowly or you can miss it (I did on the first instance). Now drive down Soi 9 until you come to a fork in the road and veer right there. About 30 meters along, Max und Moritz is on your right. The restaurant is almost opposite the Ratanakorn 10 development.
You will not be disappointed with the Max und Moritz restaurant, good food, more than ample portions and charming owners in Thip and Dao. Do go and try, it is worth the hassle of trying to find it!
