In the past six months, the Dining Out team has been to many restaurants and I have selected ones that we felt were good. We also split the restaurants into three categories – Budget, Middle and High.

First category we called Budget. Two contenders from the Dark side. First was Shenanigans by the Lake, and we enjoyed ourselves so much there, we went back on the Sunday for their roasts that run from 12 till 6 (B. 240-280 and children B. 150). A very welcome addition to the pub scene in Pattaya. Highly recommended.

Shenanigans by the Lake (Loch), Mabprachan, Siam Country Club Road, open seven days 11 a.m. till midnight (but kitchen closes 9 p.m.), telephone 092 471 1744, off-road parking.

The other Budget eatery was Kung and Pinky offering inexpensive well cooked food, with large portions in a very clean establishment. Directions – down Siam Country Club Road and about one km past the traffic lights, on the right is the Bali Resort and after that a sharp right turn next to Tui’s Place and follow the signs. You will return to this restaurant, guaranteed.

Kung and Pinky, open 8.30 a.m. until 9.30 p.m. six days (closed Thursdays), with Sunday roasts noon till 2 p.m., telephone 087 043 3905, plenty of on-street parking.

Pepper and Salt was in our “Middle” category. The menu covers different meats, poultry and seafood and with the additional Thai, Chinese and Indonesian items. The prices are extremely reasonable and the portions are large, making this restaurant very suitable for those on a budget. I do suggest you book, rather than be disappointed. Highly recommended.

Pepper and Salt, Soi Khao Talo corner Soi 22, telephone Eddie 085 596 2713, Open six days (closed Tuesdays), hours 11 a.m. until late (kitchen closes at 10 p.m.), on-street parking.

Madame had the slow-simmered lamb shank with fried potatoes and was still raving about it in the car park!

Still ‘Middle’, Nong Bistro just gets better and better. Try Steak Nong Bistro which has 150 gm of thin beef fillets with whiskey and garlic sauce. This restaurant is definitely worth visiting. Highly recommended.

Nong Bistro, 99/6-7, Sirisa Building, Soi Siam Country Club, Moo 6, (about 50 meters past Soi 13 and on your right and before Hastin Kindergarten), email: nongbarsoi9@ hotmail.com, telephone: 038 115 701, mobile: 082 131 3411. Open six days (closed Mondays), 1 p.m. till 11 p.m. Plenty of parking in front of the restaurant.

French Dover sole accompanied by roesti potatoes.

Now to the top level for stand-alone restaurants only. I do not include hotel restaurants, even though some are magnificent.

Casa Pascal. Casa Pascal has maintained the highest standards for the many years it has been delighting the diners in Pattaya. You can recommend Casa Pascal to anyone who appreciates the finer things in life. It is not often that you meet someone completely on top of their game. Highest recommendation possible.

Casa Pascal, 485/M10, Pattaya Second Road, (small soi next Ruen Thai and opposite the Marriott Hotel’s Dicey Reilly’s Pub) Pattaya City, reservation 038 723 660, (mob) 081 983 4182, email info@restaurant-pattaya. com. Secure parking. Breakfast and Lunch Buffet from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. (or a la carte if you wish), dinner 6 p.m. until late.

And finally Ticino. Ticino, close to Swiss Paradise, telephone 084 676 7376; GPS N 12.9180 E 00.9334, but Ticino also has maps, just go to the website. Excellent food with a great evening in the gardens. (http://www.ticino.co.th); email [email protected]. Open 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. six days (closed Tuesdays). Off-street car parking.

Bon Appetit!
