BANGKOK, (NNT) – The Governor of Bangkok today led participants at Sanam Luang in offering alms to 189 monks on the auspicious occasion of the first day of the year.

At 7:00 a.m. on January 1, Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra presided over the ceremony to give alms to 189 monks, attended by officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and representatives of the civil and private sectors.

The ceremony at Sanam Luang serves an auspicious way to begin the new year and to help preserve the cultural traditions of the people of Thailand.

Bangkok’s New Year festival included a night prayer on entering the new calendar year, worshiping of the Phuttaratchabophit Buddist statue and traditional Thai performances.
