The IPGC Monthly Members’ Tournament
Rayong CC, Wednesday, 3rd August
On Wednesday, 3rd August, a substantial field of IPGC regulars and returning members gathered at Rayong CC for the first IPGC Members’ Tournament of the new season. The revamped format of two flights, the attractive fixed prize fund and the introduction of a lucky draw, heavily sponsored by IPGC, were new initiatives which were all met with approval by the members.
Each monthly member’s tournament will provide winners in both divisions who will go forward to the finals to compete for the Gold and Silver Medals later in the season. In addition the tournaments will also be used to determine the IPGC Gentleman Player of the Year, with between 1 and 15 points to be won in each division every month, dependant on final positions, which will then be aggregated for the year to establish the overall winner. As usual the first division contests a stroke play format whilst the second division play Stableford.
In the first division the competition was very close with a countback deciding the minor placings and Graham Davis’ 37 strokes on the back nine relegated him to third place with net 73 as Rob Lamond’s one-under back nine total gave him second place with the same net return.
The flight winner was Pattaya’s most consistent golfer currently, Peter Masters. His recent last five competition rounds have seen him equal par once and break par four times. This form continued with scores of 39 on the front nine and an uncharacteristic 42 on the back, which saw an unwelcome return by his bête noir, “Mr Hosel” which gave him the indignity of a seven on the seventeenth. Elsewhere in his round the usual accuracy and touch remained intact.
The second division played Stableford and things were equally tight again as Ronnie Ramsay took third on countback from Tom McCarthy with 33 points, Tom having lost his way on the back nine after a sparkling outward half of 21 points. In second place was the Haven’s Rod Howett with 34 points whilst the winner was Ted Morris with a splendid 35 point return on the course, with its difficult and recently dressed greens.
In the “twos” competitions there were two birdies for Al Keith, with one each for the Scottish duo of Peter Duncan and Ronnie Ramsay.
After the tournament the golfers enjoyed an excellent presentation buffet at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao, the regular golf base for the PGS. The introduction of the lucky draw gave everyone a share of the fun of the day. The presentation and prizes were generously sponsored as always by the IPGC, and “emcee” for the evening, Len Jones warmly thanked those who had contributed to the success of the day, including the hard working Peung and her staff at Rabbi’s.
