NONG KHAI – The water level in the Mekong River has been steadily decreasing, sparking concerns that it will significantly affect water supplies.
Recent measurement of the Mekong River by the Nong Khai Provincial Department of Water Resources reported a depth of 1.84 meters, a 12 centimeter decrease from the day before, making it the lowest level this year with the likelihood of a further decrease.
The lowest recorded level last year was on March 8 at 1.21 meters.
The sharp decline may be due to the decrease in water levels of dams in China, resulting in less water flowing through to Thailand.
Meanwhile, Nakhon Phanom Province is experiencing a shortage in water supplies, prompting officials to dig new irrigation canals to better distribute water.
