Survey for ancient ruins being conducted at Chiang Mai Woman Correctional Institution

CHIANG MAI – A team of earth science experts are conducting geophysical surveys along the Chiang Mai Woman Correctional Institution to search for artifacts and ancient ruins.

Asst Prof Krit Won-in, Lecturer at the Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Science of Kasetsart University has led a team of geophysical surveyors as part of the Wiang Kaew development project by the 8th Regional Office of the Fine Arts Department, Chiang Mai.

Prof Krit said it will take 3-5 days to explore the area of 5,300 square meters, after which the team will process the information extracted. His team is hired by the Fine Arts Department to handle the excavation site.

Meanwhile, Saiklang Jindasu, an archaeologist from the 8th Regional Office of Fine Arts Department, said that if artifacts and ancient ruins were found, an assessment must be made whether the site could be restored. If the site did contain ancient ruins, they will be protected by law and cannot be destroyed.
