BANGKOK – The Ministry of Tourism and Sports said the tourism sector last year performed better than expected, generating roughly two trillion baht in revenue.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanawarangkul said that tourism revenue in 2015 grew by 30 billion baht year-on-year. It was considered a success for the ministry’s campaign, “12 Can’t-miss Cities.”

The campaign ostensibly increased tourist spending to an average of 5,050 baht per day from 4,500 baht the year before. Another 12 cities will be included in the campaign, which will be renamed to “12 Can’t-miss Cities Plus.”

The minister said the expanded campaign will further promote domestic tourism. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the ministry to raise the standards of tourism in Thailand in order to gain more confidence abroad and set up a one-stop service for tourist assistance.
