PSC Golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Monday, Jan. 11, Phoenix Gold – Stableford

Phoenix was the challenge on a day with heavy cloud and some rain but not too much to be uncomfortable.  The course was in great condition and Mountain and the Lakes were the loops we played.

The new par-5 on the Lakes side was tamed by 2 golfers in the scribe’s group, Paulie O’Mahony and Kyle Roadley aka (Roachy), both players hitting driver over the water (a carry of 240 meters) and both hit 5-irons into the green for eagle putts, Paulie converting his.

Allan Beck with Gentry Harrington.

Some of the greens on this side are a bit tricky and you really need to be able to place the ball to have any show of getting the putts to drop.

The scores were pretty good with Craig Wheeler taking fourth spot with 31 points while third went to Glyn Davies with 38, him being beaten on a count back by Capt Bob on the same score.  Les Easton was the winner on the day with a fine 39 points.

There was only one ‘2’ recorded, by Paulie O’Mahony.

Wednesday, Jan. 13, Green Valley – Stableford

According to one of the caddies, Green Valley had experienced rain every day since Sunday and this had an effect on the scoring, for the fairways were sufficiently wet and soggy enough to have invoked preferred lies had we known.  The greens had not been cut and were as slow as a snail doing a hundred yard sprint and had a severe effect on the scoring.

The high season has certainly arrived for all around the course there were 2 groups on every hole with the exception of the 16th, which had 3 groups and 1 group approaching.  The reason for the present layout, according to the management was to avoid delays on, what was the par three 2nd hole.  With 5 groups on this hole 2 weeks ago it is obvious that this solution, to a nonexistent problem, is not working.  How do you gauge success or failure – the delays on the 16th says it all.

Noodle, Pin and Som.

Only 2 out of the 42 golfers bettered their handicap today, one of them being Miss Noodle with a clear lead at the tape of 3 points in the ladies flight over Miss Pin who came in with 35 points and was followed by Miss Som with 33.

There were 3 golfers on 35 points with Bob Philp missing out, as did Mark Allen, being relegated to fifth place by Dennis Pelly.  Another count back saw Alan Back on 36 points lose out to Wayne Cotterell for second place.  But the star of the day was John Player with a very good 40 points in the difficult conditions.

Four ‘2’s today came from Tim Knight, Geoff Stimpson, John Player and Auk Engelkes.

Friday, Jan. 15, Burapha – Stableford

Burapha A and B loops were the place to be today with over 400 hundred golfers on the two courses (both C and D were packed), but the round took just over 4 hours and our thanks go to the management and staff for their efforts.

The course was in grand condition as usual with greens that were like lightening and nice lush fairways.  Maybe that is because of the rain, it had rained there every day this week.

The scores were quite good today with a count back for the minor places separating three players all on 37 points.  Dave Bramley got the prize for fourth, third went to Peter Stonebridge and in second spot was Gentry Harrington, but the stand out winner today was Allan Beck with 80 off the stick off his 16 handicap to shoot a remarkable 44 points.

There were two ‘2’s, coming from Peter Stonebridge and Bob Philp.
