BANGKOK – The policy committee on migrant workers and human trafficking will propose to the Cabinet a deadline extension for one million migrant workers to register their nationality.
Members of the policy committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, have agreed to a deadline extension to allow Myanmar, Laotian and Cambodian workers to stay in the Kingdom temporarily until the Cabinet determines a new deadline for the nationality registration period.
The current period will come to an end on March 31. The policy committee also wants to extend work permits for these migrant workers from one year to two years and allow alien workers in seafood factories to have their employment legally recognized.
Department of Employment (DoE) Director-General Arak Prommadee said these proposals will be submited to the Cabinet for consideration next Tuesday. The DoE has also been instructed by the policy committee to conduct a study on the possibility of setting up a new government unit to manage the migrant worker population.
