Tuesday, March 1, Khao Kheow – Stableford
It’s always a pleasure to go to this fine course and on this day we had a full group of players signed up. As we approached the course we noticed that the trees were swaying in the wind. Oh happy days, nothing beats a windy day on a tough course. Still, we had a quick book in and then out to see what the day produced.
Playing the A & B nines in a strong wind beat up most of the players and at the end of the day only one had actually played to his handicap. Not a lot to say really except the unofficial score: Khao Kheow 29, Tropical Golf 0, with 1 drawn.

The course was a bit dry but the fairways were not in bad condition and the greens were quick and true. This is a fine course and we always enjoy our days out here and also, I must say the staff here have always been most helpful.
Soon back in Pattaya it was time for the results. In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Bob Watson with a fine 36 points and the only one who was not beaten by the course. Then we had a count back on 32 points that saw Tom Herrington in second and Mashi Kaneta third. In fourth was Landis Brooks with 31 points.
The scores in the B Flight were actually not quite as good, and this we normally find when the conditions are tough. The winner with 35 points was Carole Kubicki, with Rita Zoebeli in second on 32 and Michael Beat third with 31. Derek Brook took the final spot on the podium with 30 points.

Friday, March 4, Greenwood – Stableford
On Friday twenty four golfers decided it was worth the trek to Greenwood Country Club. It is a bit of a drive but for some reason traffic was lighter than usual and all cars made it to the course in plenty of time to allow some to warm up at the range, or put in extra putting practice. Some new faces graced the list this day and all were made to feel welcome.

Greenwood was in its usual fine condition. Playing the B & C courses, there were other groups playing the course, but the spacing was acceptable and no major holdups occurred. Greenwood represents exceptional value right now, and several players who usually walk took advantage of this to sit and ride for a change. We were lucky that for once it started to rain after all groups finished. Lots of water, bunkers, and jungle make the course a fair challenge, and only the most stalwart held together for 18 holes.
In A-Flight (0-18), Andre Van Dyk (h/cp 15) was the only player to beat his handicap, and in doing so handily beat the rest of the golfers. Scoring a wonderful 37 points, Andre was so much “in the zone” not all near pins were placed. The other golfers were so much in awe of Andre’s play they forgot also, but all is forgiven. Next came visiting Keichi Kasami (6) with a respectable 35 points, and Tony Berry (15) with 34.
Dr Tom McDowell (19) quietly went about his business in B-Flight (19+), carding an excellent 35 points. Next came Don Carmody (25) with 33 points, followed by Dick Warberg (19) with 32 on count back over Mock Coghlan and Daryl Evans.

Not to be forgotten we bid a fond farewell to uber-golfer Bob Watson who heads back to Aussieland. For years Bob has been an inspiration to numerous players with his excellent level of play, willingness to help any who ask how to improve and excellent banter after the round. Bob will be sorely missed. Keep in touch Bob and hurry back for some visits!
