Pattaya officials warned Songkran revelers not to throw water or engage in Thai New Year frivolity around the construction site for the Central Road bypass tunnel on Sukhumvit Road.

Municipal officers and police handed out flyers along Sukhumvit April 5, asking for celebrants to go to Pattaya Beach to engage in water fights, particularly on the city’s “wan lai” day, April 19.

Traffic normally comes to a near standstill on Sukhumvit on wan lai day and this year, with lanes closed due to construction of the 900-million-baht tunnel, the gridlock is expected to be even worse.

The limited space for pedestrians, combined with heavy traffic and construction hazards pose risks to personal safety, the city said.

Instead, revelers were told to head downtown, where the water fighting will be fast and furious, unlike Sukhumvit Road traffic.
