Top navy officials attend funeral for marine killed in South

Top Royal Thai Navy officers attended funeral services in Sattahip for a marine killed by a roadside bomb in Thailand’s troubled South.

Navy commander in chief, Adm. Na Areenij and Marine Corps commander, Vice Adm. Rattana Wongsaroj received the body of Sgt. Maj. Jittapol Renu Na Ayutthaya, 27, May 3 at the U-Tapao air base.

Jittapol was killed the previous day in Narathiwat’s Tak Bai district when his patrol investigated a report men were digging a hole in a local road in Nanak municipality. A bomb there exploded, ripping through his lower half with shrapnel.

Sgt. Maj. Jittapol Renu Na Ayutthaya’s body was returned to Sattahip for funeral services attended by top Royal Thai Navy officers.

Naval officers attended the royal bathing ceremony later that day with funeral and religious ceremony held later at 7.30 p.m. at the crematorium site in the Royal Thai Navy in Sattahip.

His body was transported the next day for cremation at a temple in his home town in Buri Ram Province.

Adm. Na posthumously promoted the fallen marine to captain. His family also will receive 600,000 baht in insurance payment from the navy, 500,000 baht payouts from the Defense Ministry and Office of Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, and additional donations from the navy, bringing total compensation to 2.6 million baht.

Jittapol is survived by his wife Panida and one child in Buri Ram.
