BANGKOK, 30 August 2011 – The Democrat Party has officially launched its political school with the first course focusing on economic matters in a bid to prep students for the 2012 budget bill debate in November.

Chief Advisor of the Democrat Party Chuan Leekpai presided over the inauguration ceremony of the party’s political school. There are totally 73 Democrat MPs and former MP candidates registered for the first training course, which will cover politics in Southeast Asia, Thai politics, democracy, economy and finance, Thai economic development and global economic changes.

During his speech, Mr Chuan said he wished that the students would attend all classes and eagerly pursue more knowledge since MPs needed to have a wide perspective in order to be able to work efficiently for the nation.

Meanwhile, Democrat MP for Surat Thani Suthep Thaugsuban, who is the director of the school, pointed out that the school’s objective is to help Thai people stay up to date with developments in both Thai and global politics and economy and to educate them on how to protect national interests.

As for the first course, Mr Suthep said the emphasis would be placed on economic and financial issues as a way to prepare MPs for the parliamentary debate over the 2012 budget bill to be proposed by the Government in November.

According to the Surat Thani MP, the school is set to open classes for community leaders and the general public in the future.
