BANGKOK, Sept 14 — Thai students won one gold, three silver medals, and a number of special awards at the 5th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO 2011) in Modena, Italy in a competition with began Sept 5 -14, according to the Promotion of Academic Olympiad and Development of Science Education Foundation under the patronage of the late HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana.
The gold medalist was identified as Pachara Wongsuthikosol from Suankularb Wittayalai School; the three silver medalists were Yossathon Thawabutr from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, which was also awarded International Team Field Investigation Best Creativity Award and Best Student in Astronomy, Piyawat Lertsiripatarachit from Triam Udom Suksa Schoo, which was also awarded International Team Field Investigation Best Cooperation Award and Thanasapol Jariyasethwong from Triam Udom Suksa School.
They are scheduled to return to Thailand Thursday afternoon.
This year’s IESO topic is Earth Science Renaissance focusing on science, environment and art and the competition was held for the first time in Europe–and also the first in Italy.
Thai students to compete at the IESO for the third time. One hundred four students from 26 countries participated in this year’s competition.
IESO is an annual competition for secondary school students. Competing students test their skills in all major areas of earth sciences, including geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, terrestrial astronomy and environmental sciences.
