German Mathias Bachinger posted his first back-to-back match wins on the ATP World Tour after beating local favourite Danai Udomchoke 7-6(5) 6-3 at the PTT Thailand Open 2011 on Wednesday.
The Thai veteran felt he had his best chance to reach the quarter-finals for the first time after defeating #6 seed Fabio Fognini on Monday. However, he admitted putting too much pressure on himself to play well like in the first round and that was why his first serve did not click.
“I was mostly on the defensive end when I played second serves and I could not move as well as I am used to during rallies,” said Udomchoke, who is ranked #217.
Udomchoke was up 5-3 in the first-set tiebreaker but missed his chance serve out the first set. The momentum then went to Bachinger, who continued to attack the Thai player with powerful serves, and broke twice for a 5-2 lead in the second set. Udomchoke managed to get one break back, however, Bachinger proved too strong for Udomchoke as the German held and broke the Thai opponent again to close the match. Bachinger finished with eight aces and just one double fault for the match.
The Munich native, who is ranked #98 awaits the winner of the match between #3 seed Gilles Simon and Yen-Hsun Lu to be played tonight.
In other second-round matches in the day session, Tobias Kamke of Germany followed his countryman to the quarter-final round, routing #8 Spaniard Pablo Andujar in a near-whitewash 6-0 6-1 in just 58 minutes.
The German, who reached his first career semi-final in Newport in July, will face Japanese qualifier Go Soeda in the quarter-finals. Soeda came from behind to edge Karol Beck of Slovakia in a 3-6 7-6(0) 7-6(4) victory.
