Employees at the Siam Bayview Hotel turned wood and paper scraps into works of art as part of the resort’s efforts to promote environmental conservation.
The hotel’s housekeeping department organized the Sept. 23 “Wonders of Wastepaper” contest with workers from the hotel’s various sections submitting 28 pulp-based projects for judging in the hotel’s Greenleaf environmental program.
Among the entries were lamps, a Suphhanhong-style boat, gift bags and even a Santa Claus figure. General Manager Nijjaporn Maaprasert said the contest showed employees that waste products can be recycled into useful and decorative items.
Siam Bayview’s technical department won first prize with their Traditional Thai house (center). Housekeeping took second place with a framed artwork of a bed of flowers (left), and the Accounting Department’s figure of a mythical phoenix (right) won third place.
The products largely were composed of hand-made mulberry rice paper, which can be made from used magazine pages, scraps, cards, non-waxed boxes, office paper, napkins and other paper products. The waste is cut up into small pieces and then mixed in a blender with warm water then molded into sheets or shapes.
The Siam Bayview’s technical department won the 1,500 baht first prize in the contest with a traditional Thai house. Housekeeping took the 1,000 baht second place with a framed artwork of a bed of flowers, and the Accounting Department’s figure of a mythical phoenix won third place and 800 baht.
