IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
On Monday, 26th September the Pattaya Golf Society revisited the Royal Thai Navy course at Plutaluang for the first time in more than three years, hearing it was in good condition. It did not disappoint but the West course greens were being sanded and the North course greens were at their traditional slow speed.
With the white tees well back the field playing strokeplay found the course difficult to cope with and there were more than a few nil returns. The main culprit was the Lighthouse hole with a strong breeze blowing sideways and the yellow posts around the green indicated there was no easy relief.
In third place with net 83 was Tore Eliassen whilst Wichai Tananusorn was way ahead in second, a full ten shots clear. The winner was Paul Blackshaw and his excellent round showing command in the wind helped him record net 69 for a fine win.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the whole group can look forward to trying the course again soon, maybe on a calmer day.
Kato at his best
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Pattana on Wednesday, 28th October to play a stableford competition over the B and C nines from the white tees, all of 6,700 yards and counting! With a strong breeze blowing, tees well back, soft fairways and little or no run the day was to be a testing one for all but the longest and most accurate golfers.
With a plethora of low scores only Haruyuki Kato managed to play near his handicap with a fine 35 points for the win. A country mile away sharing second place were Masanori Takano and Len Jones with 25!
The difficult par threes proved a barrier to scoring birdies and poor Masashi Iizumi finished his current stay with a nil return which won him the Booby Bevy. It was indeed a tough day and playing from the yellows would not have helped as on the B nine they were immediately next to the white! Challenging times lie ahead for the PGS at Pattana.
Close call at Khao Kheow
On Friday, 30th September the Pattaya Golf Society ended a testing week of golf with a visit to Khao Kheow to play a stableford competition over the newly reopened A and B nines. Playing off yellows it was to be another hard slog for many in the field, however it was much closer than the previous encounters this week.
In third place with 28 points was Tony Thorne, still recovering from a virus attack which had laid him low earlier. Sharing the win were Benny Hansen and Wichai Tananusorn, both with 32 points.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by John O’Sullivan and Tony Thorne for their efforts on B3 and B8 respectively and the Booby Bevy should have gone to Masa Takano for his two poor rounds this week but the low scoring claims of Keith Melbourne could not be denied. Thus the curtain was drawn on a tough week to end the month with the PGS.
