Monday, October 10, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
A heavy thunderstorm started here in Jomtien around 6 a.m. and by the time we reached Siam Cats there had been two hours of continuous rain, Soi 5 was waterlogged with six inches of water rolling down the road towards the beach. The phone now started ringing with people saying they couldn’t leave their condos due to the weather conditions so we rang the course and were told it has been raining heavily there for the past two hours, so we cancelled the day.
Wednesday, Oct. 12, St. Andrews – Stableford
There were seven groups (28 players) signed up for today in probably our last visit here until the low season kicks in next May because of the price. There were a couple of late cancellations and no-shows so we ended up with 24 in the group.
Friday’s winning Irish boys, Cully Monks and Martin McAteer, with the Siam Cats ladies.
Yet again it started raining after four holes for the first group and this was intermittent until we reached the ninth tee. Some of the fairways had been sodden and a few of the greens waterlogged up till then, so we decided to play this hole and call it a day for the third round in a row.
Most of the groups behind had already gone back to the clubhouse and many, thanks to the management, received an eighteen-hole rain check with buggy as well.
Friday, Oct. 14, Eastern Star – Stableford
The skies today looked a bit healthier than they had for the past ten days and as we arrived here the sun was out with a mediocre wind coming off the coast, so pleasant conditions all round.
The cut today in the men’s division with 36 out was 3-13 in div 1, 14-18 div 2 and 19 plus in division 3, with the ladies in their own competition.
The Irish boy Cully Monks won division 2 with 35 points, Frank Kelly was second one point behind and Ya Riley took third with 32. Another 35 in division 3 won it for Jim Lane with Marytn Arnold a regular visitor from Hong Kong second on 34 and Lee Casey in third with a meager 28.
Toi Blair won the ladies division with 33 points with Josie Monks second on 28.
Roy Thornton topped division 1 with 34 points with Sean Connolly, playing off 10, in second on 33 and Bill Bertram beat Jon Lay, Marty Rock and Barry Wellings on a 20/16/16/13 back nine count back for third as they all came in with 31 points.
Martin McAteer birdied the 13th in division 1 in the ‘2’s to take the day’s pot while there were 4 rollovers in division 2 until the following Friday.
Near pins went to Rob Lamond, Cully Monks (2), Sean Connolly, Tony Hill, Martin McAteer and Chris Voller.
