Pattaya’s clothiers rebounded from a ‘black’ year with brisk sales of qipao dresses for Chinese New Year.

This time last year most Thais wore black during the royal mourning period, devastating the usually brisk market for brilliant red and gold qipao, or cheongsam, dresses.

Naklua’s five big shops selling the body-hugging one piece dresses were bustling Feb. 13, just before “Year of the Dog” celebrations kicked off.

While many Thais trace their roots back to China, the tradition of wearing qipao for the New Year now transcends ethnicity, with many people working in hotels, banks and schools wearing them for the occasion.

Prices started at 199 baht depending on fabric, size and style.

Some customers interviewed said this was their first qipao purchase while others had dresses previously, but wanted a new design.
