BANGKOK, Nov 19 – Up to Bt19 billion in tourist spending is expected as people head to major attractions in the North during the last two months of 2013, according to a survey by Kasikorn Research Centre (KResearch).
KResearch estimates that the number of Thais visiting the North during November and December this year will reach 4.23 million, a 6.8 per cent increase from only 4 million last year, with the most popular destinations being Chiang Mai, Phetchabun and Chiang Rai provinces. The would-be tourists will likely spend Bt19.1 billion, a 7.1 per cent increase from Bt17.8 billion last year.
Based on the research, Chiang Mai remains the most popular destination to visit especially up on Doi Inthanon and Doi Ang Kang which overlook the sea of fog. Doi Pa Hom Pok and Huay Nam Dang also serve as Chiang Mai’s major attractions.
People also enjoy the view of a sea of fog at Kao Koh, Phu Tub Berg and Phu Hin Rong Khla mountains in Phetchabun province. While visiting there, they can also pay respect to the holy Phrathat Pa Son Kaew.
Chiang Rai province, meanwhile, serves as the third popular place that is visited by Thai tourists each year, with Phu Chee Fah and Botanical gardens up on Doi Tung and Doi Mae Salong mountains serve as major tourism sites.
The research centre however noted that political stability and rising costs of living are key factors which may influence people’s purchasing power, their confidence as well as prospective travel plan.
